Memorial Day Weekend BBQ

On Sunday we went to Andrew's parents for a yummy bbq. After dinner we walked around the neighborhood and...

...chased bunnies...

... practiced rock climbing...

... celebrated successful climbing with smiles...

... struck a pose while getting hydrated...

... sat three deep in the wagon...

... and were pulled by Pops and Emmie...

... spotted two owls here, and one more in another tree...

... had a watermelon snack in the grass.

Outdoor Chalk Board

Today the girls finally got to try out our new outdoor chalkboard (it has been in process, along with about 15 other projects, for a few weeks now).

It was a big hit. I used a piece of wood that we had leftover from another project so it is kind of a funny size - if they continue to like it I might have to invest in another bigger piece of wood.

Flower Arranging and Stamping

I have seen flower arranging as a preschool activity a couple of places, but a few nights ago I ran into the idea of incorporating beans into it (at one of my new favorite blogs, Chasing Cheerios.) I filled the tray with beans, Malia scooped the beans into the pot and then arranged the flowers in the pot.
The only bad thing about this was it did not take her very long to complete. She wanted another activity so after I brought down a set of alphabet stamps that I recently picked up at a garage sale for $1. My thought was that she would arrange them in alphabetical order but she wanted to stamp with them.

First she stamped the names she can spell by herself - Malia, Davey, Sadie and Kylie (the two girls I babysit). Usually she spells these names aloud or by typing them on the computer so I had to try and teach her that words are spelled from left to right because she kept doing wanting stamp them the other way (it is so funny/hard to teach something that is so instinctive to you).

The highlight of the time for me was the realization that she can now spell Mommy without help and she is pretty close on Daddy.

Porch Swing

I think I fell in love with porch swings the first summer that I lived with my friend, Lisa's, family. They had one on the front porch and I really enjoyed swinging and talking or swinging and reading... it is just so soothing and peaceful.

I have wanted to get one since we moved into our house here, but there always seems to be a more practical way to spend the money. This year for Mother's Day, Andrew's gift to me was an IOU for a porch swing.

We started our search at the local big box store and then we decided to look on Craigslist to see if we could find a used one for a little cheaper. Long story short, I landed a swing for free! The cushion is a little beat up (which is why the lady gave it to me for free instead of charging the $10 she was initially asking), but we just threw a fitted sheet over it (thanks Mom Wolgs) and we are happy swinging away.

The girls love it and so do I!

Estes Park

On Friday night, we drove up to Estes Park for a little family adventure. The weather was not great (it was cold and rainy) but we were blessed to have about 24 hours of quality time together, away from the distractions of everyday life.

Highlights included ice cream, pop tarts for breakfast, elk sightings, touching ice cold water, and using an umbrella for the first time. Not pictured events include playing "night time", Bingo, Yahtzee, puzzles, reading, exploring...

Andrew's Half Marathon

On Sunday, Andrew ran his first half marathon. His goal was to finish in under 2 hours and he finished in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 51 seconds!

Andrew's dad was an amazing supporter who got up at 4 a.m. to drive him downtown and then followed him throughout the race (riding his bike from spot to spot) to cheer him on.
I really wanted to be there but because the race started at 6 a.m. and because it was such a dreadfully cold and wet morning, I did not think I was going to be able to do so. I ended up deciding to try which meant having to wake both girls up, rushing downtown (not speeding, but taking the toll road that I usually avoid) and then running a mile in my winter boots while pushing our double stroller (I must have looked ridiculous). My efforts paid off - I met up with his dad about a quarter mile from the finish and literally within a minute of arriving, Andrew ran past us! I was so pleased.
Later in the day, Malia wore Andrew's medal out while we ran errands and kept saying that "Daddy won". We are all proud of you Andrew!

Minnie Mouse and Spiderman

For Malia's 3rd birthday we got her a dress up bin. I stocked it with mostly costumes that I got at Target after Halloween last year when they were 90% off, meaning they were $1 or $2 each! (I may have written about this before?)

Last week while Graham was over we got him dressed in a costume I bought with my nephews in mind - Spiderman. I just love the fake muscles in it.

Malia has lived in this Minnie costume all week (which is really hard to get on and off and consequently busting at several seams).

Davey's Gift

I mentioned that Malia and I made Davey a gift in my last post. Here is a picture.

I saw the idea on Chasing Cheerios. It was very easy, minus the fact that after we painted the barrels and people, they no longer fit together (we had even tested them all before) so we had to sand them a bunch.

We used some watercolors that I had leftover from a class I took in college - I was surprised that after 8 years, they still worked great! Malia painted the barrels and I painted the people ("girls" according to Malia that are all named Davey). It was so much fun!

Davey has enjoyed them. The day after we gave them to her, we used them to keep her content after she ate (which allowed us to finish eating).

1 1/2

Since both of my girls birthdays fall within 6 weeks of Christmas, I have decided that half birthdays should be celebrated in our household.

Davey turned 1 1/2 on Monday. And we had a little celebration which was really just cupcakes, singing Happy Birthday and a gift that Malia helped me make (more of that in another post).

18 months has gone fast. My little baby is running and talking and singing. I sneezed the other day and she said "Bless you Mommy." She loves singing songs and reading books. She climbs onto chairs, cries a bit when we drop her off for nursery and throws a fit if anyone tries to play with the toy she is playing with. We sure do love her.

Davey's Dedication

We had Davey dedicated this weekend at church. It was a special time to acknowledge that her life belongs to the Lord. My parents came in town so we were able to have both sets of grandparents (as well as some aunts and uncles) in attendance.

The extended fam.

Our fam.

Davey fell the day before while playing outside and skinned her chin. For awhile it was bleeding enough that we weren't sure if she split her chin or not. Luckily she didn't and she did surprisingly well at keeping a band-aid on it.

Attempt to get a picture of the girls with my parents. It was bedtime and it had been a long day.

Lisa's Wedding

Last weekend, Andrew and I left the girls at home (with their grandparents) and ventured off for three days on our own. The occasion was my good friend, Lisa's, wedding. It was a great weekend. Really fun to be free of responsibilities for a few days and really fun to come home to my beautiful girls.

I lugged my camera around most of the weekend but only took a few pictures.
