U is for Us, Umbrellas and the United States

For U, our phrase was "God made us wonderful" and we talked about the 5 senses.

I traced the girls and they colored themselves.

One of the activities that MFW suggested was talking about the 5 senses while making (and eating) popcorn. The girls were a big fan of this.

The girls also had fun arranging these paper umbrellas from the dollar store in play dough and foam.

We also talked about the United States and did some puzzles. Malia is working on memorizing a song that I learned in 4th grade that puts the states in alphabetical order. She does a really nice job except often skips Missouri, New York, Oregon and a couple of others!

Fall Sensory Bin

At the beginning of November, Malia helped me put together our fall sensory bin. I used a larger container with this sensory because I had so much stuff to explore (thanks to a large amount of hazelnuts used in some centerpieces a few years back).

I put out all of the materials and Malia actually arranged them.

Close up.

This has been played with a ton at our house this month. Maybe the biggest fan of it is Naomi who enjoys climbing into it, and in the case, lounging in it (please excuse her snotty nose!)

Snowy Day

Last week we got some snow. All morning, the girls wanted to go out and play in it. I told them they had to wait until lunch when Andrew could go out with them. To appease their desire to play in the snow for the morning, I brought a pan full inside.

It was fun to watch Naomi explore the snow.

At lunch, it was finally time to bundle up and sled. I think this was Naomi's first time joining the backyard sledding fun. She was a fan (even if her boots wouldn't stay on).

100 Easy Lessons

Last week Malia finished her reading book. We have been working on it for about 2 years (I may have started her too early and in those 2 years we ended up taking multiple long breaks). Reading is really clicking for her now and it is fun (and scary) to see.

To celebrate her completion, we had homemade sundaes with Emmie and Pops. The girls favorite part was the Reddi Wip, especially when Andrew shot it straight into their mouths!

Leaves

A couple of weekends ago we raked up the leaves in our yard. Trees are not very big in our neighborhood which means the leaf pile is not that impressive, but I thought the girls would like it anyway.

Naomi was much more interested in the Coupe Car then the leaves.

Davey was the most adventurous and even let me bury her in the leaves.

By far, Davey and Malia's favorite part of the day was crushing the leaves down in the garbage can - something only their father could turn into a fun activity by practically throwing them in and bobbing them up and down.

Neighborhood Owl

Last week while "running" in our neighborhood, I spotted an owl. (Full disclosure: I run about once a month... or maybe every other month). It was just sitting in a bare tree not far from the path I was on. I went home, grabbed Andrew and the girls and showed off my find.

Since then, we have been back 3 more times to see our owl.

On our last visit, Andrew had the idea to look for owl pellets under the tree. (The owl had already flown away thanks to one of our children who might have started throwing a little fit and scared it away).
We saw some pellets and it took me back to middle school when we had to dissect them in school. So thanks to a tissue, a box and a brave Emmie who picked them up, we brought these two home.

The girls got way into it. They (mostly) used toothpicks to break the pellets apart and find bones inside the fur.

A close up of some of the bones we discovered inside.

Sunglasses Love

Davey is the big sunglass wearer in our house. We got her a new pair of pink diva sunglasses for her birthday. She is a fan of them. But so is her younger sister. The other morning she was crawling around looking like this...

... yep she put them on herself!

U is for Under... Down Under

We took some time a few weeks ago to study Australia (the Land Down Under). The girls explored our continent box and we read lots of books about Australia.

Halloween Activities

The week of Halloween was the girls fall break so we didn't do much school. We did have a few activities though.

Our Halloween sensory box was out...

... and the biggest fan of it was Naomi. She loved exploring all of the different things (and continually surprised me with how little she tries to put things in her mouth).

We also did felt pumpkin people after seeing them here.

Painting Pumpkins

Catching up here... A several weeks ago we painted our pumpkins. We have been having lots of beautiful weekend weather this fall and so we were able to do it outside. I love watching the girls create...

Davey's Costume Party

We had 8 girls (+ ours) at our house to celebrate Davey's birthday. Months before, we had talked about how her birthday was after Halloween and so she decided she wanted a costume party.

Malia and Davey as the kitty twins (thanks mom for sending the tutus and masks).

With her pink cake with pink sprinkles and pink candles.

Sister love.

I failed to get a picture of all the girls dressed up :( Here they are doing their craft. Davey might be pouting in this picture. Hey its her party and she'll cry if she wants to!

Blowing out her candles.

Davey's 4!

Yesterday was Davey's 4th birthday. We celebrated Friday night with friends (pictures to come) and on Saturday morning with family. Saturday night we opened some presents with our five family.

These were part of an attempt to get a picture of the 3 girls before we opened presents. As you can see Naomi is much more interested in exploring the presents than getting her picture taken!

 Davey's senior picture shot.

Our glam gal sporting some of her new duds.

We are so grateful that this blond haired, blued eyed beauty is a part of our family. She is spunky, silly, and smart. She loves lots of things that start with P and wants to be a princess when she grows up. She does not like to go to the bathroom and can hold her bladder forever. She loves to color. She always wants to do something fun. She would wear a dress everyday if she could. She is introverted and most days loves to nap still. We love our Davey Lou.
