Ramona Day

Earlier this year, I started reading through the Ramona series with Davey. It was her first time listening to the full series. Malia joined us too which means she has listened to the entire series 3 times in the last year or so. What can I say, we love Ramona!

While reading one day, I came up with the idea that we should have a Ramona Day after we finished the final book to celebrate. The girls and I have been talking and planning Ramona Day for weeks. Here's some of what we did...

As often as they remembered, Malia was called Beezus, Davey was called Ramona and Naomi was called Roberta.

Each girl got a full tube of toothpaste to squeeze out because in an act of defiance and curiosity Ramona squeezed out a tube.

We ate fig newtons and applesauce after marching around the house with instruments because that is what the kids did when Ramona threw herself a party.

We had strips of paper the length of our kitchen floor like the ones Ramona and her father drew on.

The girls each got a box of tissues to empty and disperse around the house because Ramona had given Willa Jean a box to do this with while her parents were hosting their neighbors.

We took our "tin can stilts" outside and yelled "Pieface" at each other.

Davey got to ride Malia's bike like how Ramona rode Howie's bike (and we discovered that the bike she has been riding is too small for her).

Not pictured : I pretended it was pay day and came home with a special presents for the girls (Pop Tarts).

We talked about lots of other ideas like wearing pajamas under clothes to school, getting a dog and naming it Picky Picky (since we are allergic to cats), going to the library to get a library card, reading about steam shovels, singing the "dawnzer song", having the girls make dinner for us, etc.

Lots of memories made while reading, planning and executing Ramona Day. Thanks Beverly Cleary!

Puppet Theater

Each month, Davey's preschool has an extra outing based on their theme. Right now they are talking about fairy tales and so the field trip was to the Denver Puppet Theater. We went last weekend and had a great time. It is a very unique place, filled with hundreds of puppets to look at and even lots to play with.

The puppet show that was performed was Rapunzel - while it was far from the Disney version that the girls are familiar with, they still enjoyed it.

A (very) small sampling of the puppets on display.

The girls got to create their own puppets and sit on a throne.

At the center of the main room was the puppet theater where Rapunzel was performed but then all around the room were other puppet stand that the kids could explore and perform in.

Haircuts (trims)

Malia and Davey were both in need of real haircuts - Malia because it had been over a year and Davey because I had trimmed hers myself and it was so uneven :) Kendal had just taken Tess to Sweet and Sassy and so I was inspired to take the girls there.

We went first thing Saturday morning and had the entire place to ourselves. Malia and Davey loved the experience (and so did I).

It was the first time Malia's hair has ever been curled and the cutest Davey's hair has ever been braided.

Malia's picture smile these days cracks me up... and reminds me of how I smiled when I was about her age.

Davey's coloring

Davey has been a coloring machine this past week. She has been adding new pictures to the fridge several times a day. Her coloring style shows of her creativity and individuality.

Malia colored the picture on the top right and mimicked Davey's style - its fun to see how they feed off of each others ideas without even really knowing it.

Ice Cream Truck

The ice cream truck came into our cup-de-sac last week. Our neighbor generously bought Hello Kitty ice cream bars for Davey and Malia. They were pretty pumped about their first ice cream truck treats!

Styrofoam Mess

We received a package last week that had styrofoam in it. In a moment of ______ (you fill in the blank - laziness, mom awesomeness, carelessness, hilarity....) I let Davey and Naomi break apart a section. They both enjoyed the activity so much.

The funniest part was the timing though - they did this while waiting for my neighbor to come pick up Davey for preschool. So as they walked up to our door, I was vacuuming styrofoam pellets off of Davey so I could send her to preschool!

These pictures are not great, but they show the mess and a bit of the chaos.

Strollers and bikes

We have been having some nice weather here recently. Last week I got out with Davey and Naomi.

Naomi loves pushing her baby stroller and exploring everything outside.

Davey was not very interested in riding a bike last summer and we didn't push her. In the last week, her interest in riding has taken off. It has been really fun to watch the progress she has made already as she gains confidence on her bike.

We celebrated Andrew and Alli's birthdays last weekend with a fiesta. Highlights were Peruvian food, Mexican ice cream, sombreros and a piñata.

 Birthday kids.

Temperatures dropped significantly on the party day, but since the predicted rain held off we are able to go outside and do the piñata.

Firefighter Naomi

I have been really bad at taking pictures the last few weeks. Part of the reason is because anytime I pull out my camera, Naomi attacks me and wants to manhandle the camera.

Last week, she dressed up in our firefighter costume and I was able to get a few pictures with her running towards me :)

A frog and mouse at the pet store

Davey's preschool went on a field trip to the pet store recently to learn about dog training. Before going, the older girls were playing dress up and Davey put on a frog costume (sized 18-24 months) and Malia was Minnie Mouse. When I asked them if they wanted to change, they said no. So I brought my pets to the pet store.

This is a blurry picture, but the only other one I had from the outing. Despite, the girls all loving the dogs they met, I am holding firm to my no pet policy (for now... maybe someday I will break down and get a fish or hermit crab in the house!)

M is for Moon

A couple weeks ago we talked about the moon.

A favorite activity was making moon shapes out of (and eating) oreos.

We used some 3 part cards to help remember the moon phases.

We talked about how we reflect God, like the moon reflects the suns light.

 Some our of moon books.

Malia read out loud "Little Bear Goes to the Moon" and we read Midnight on the Moon from the Magic Tree House series (which we are obsessed with).
