Garden of the Gods

Last week we were visited by (most of) the Spiegel family. Their kids are all older than ours, but they played so well with our girls, which blessed us so much. We all drove down to Garden of the Gods for a hike during our time together.

Fall hike and reservior fun

We are having beautiful fall weather here. Last week we went on another hike around the nearby state park with some friends.

One friend spotted an old wasp nest and my friend Jessie was brave enough to take it down and dissect it so the girls could see how it was made. I actually learned a lot from this experience :)

The wasps take bits of wood from trees and make paper to build their nest out of.

I realized about half way through our hike that it was the first time I had taken all 3 girls on a hike without Andrew. I ended up carrying Naomi (and Baba) for a lot of it, but we made it!

At the end of the hike, the girls spotted a caterpillar with horns. I think it is a Leafy Spurge Hawk Moth caterpillar.

After the hike, we went to the beach to play in the sand.

Naomi was so excited to see the water. She just walked right into that icy cold water in her clothes... and loved it. She went in several times to her waist and even fell over one time up to her shoulders.

Milkweed Seed Pods

We spent time opening milkweed seed pods last week. The pod is not that impressive but the inside is  really beautiful and fun to explore. The girls all enjoyed blowing the seeds and watching them float away.

Naomi in glasses

Naomi loves glasses. She was excited about the pair that Davey found on our recent hike. She sported them to story time at the library last week which cracked me up.

First tooth lost

Malia has had her first loose tooth for a couple of weeks. Last Monday while at school she finally lost it. I got a text from a mom who was supervising lunch that day. "Malia just lost her tooth when she bit into her pizza! I think she swallowed it. We can't find it! She doesn't seem too concerned."

Her new smile.

I suggested that she write the tooth fairy at note since she didn't have the tooth to put under her pillow.

Her face was beaming the next morning when she came downstairs with a dollar bill in her hand. Good old tooth fairy!

Pre-K Hiking

One week while Emmie was out of town, I took the two Pre-K cousins out for a hike.

As soon as we parked, Davey found a pair of glasses and Graham found a glove by the parking lot (not pictured).

They really do love each other.

Adventuring.

We stopped as the wind blew and watched the leaves fall from the trees. They had talked about leaves the week before at Pre-K so we talked a lot about leaves (texture, size, shape, etc.) as we hiked.

We saw this little Downy Woodpecker too.

School Days

Everyday of school looks different for us.

Somedays we do school in our (backwards) pajamas at the table.

Davey has the freedom to play or listen while I do school with Malia. On this particular day she was working on a tape art picture.

Somedays we actually get dressed and may move school to the family room floor.

On this day, Davey whined for the first part of school because she didn't know what to do. Finally she settled into the 100s board. I encouraged her to get to 30, but she ended up doing the whole thing.

Easel

I recently moved our easel downstairs (it had been exiled to our bedroom upstairs for over a year). Naomi enjoyed coloring on it with markers - she is really into drawing "snakes" right now! We also brought out stickers and let her put those on her picture.

I asked her to stand by her picture so I could take her picture this is how she posed.

I encouraged her to come forward in front of the picture and got this face!

I should note that since the markers have become more accessible to her, she has drawn on her body several times, including some great black marker all over her face yesterday.

Broncos Birthday Party

Graham had a Broncos Birthday party a couple of weeks ago. My pink and purple loving princesses traded their dresses for some orange and blue (thanks to a neighbor whom we borrowed our Broncos gear from).

 Look at those faces.

Malia and Davey with the birthday boy.

Naomi boycotted the above picture but was enjoying tackling the couch.

They look good in orange right?

Cousins (sorry that Naomi's hair blocked your face Des)

Erik made this goal post for G's birthday and the kids really enjoyed it.

Third Child

We often joke about the disadvantages and benefits that Naomi has from being the third child in our family. Recently, I got out the play dough for Naomi, something I admit she has not seen a lot of because, well, she is the third child. She asked to play with one color, then another and another, and on and on, but she never wanted to put any of the previous colors away.

I don't think I ever let the other girls have more than 2, maybe 3 colors out at a time. So here lies the benefit of being the third child when it comes to play dough. Since I don't have time or mental capacity to care about saving the play dough (also can be stated, I don't have time or mental capacity to be the control freak), if it gets ruined, it gets ruined. And so she got to take out all of the play dough colors she wanted! And wouldn't you know she didn't even mix them up!

Leafy

One night we were playing outside after dinner when the girls told us that they found a bug that looked like a leaf with six legs and antennas. They directed us to the middle of the cul de sac where we saw this guy...

We decided to move Leafy (as the girls cleverly named him) to our tree using this sunflower stalk.

Here he is on our tree.

We ended up transferring Leafy again to our old butterfly habitat (a net cage) where he spent the next few days and we observed him and then eventually set him free. We think he was a katydid.
