Play dough

Drew got his first taste (literally and figuratively) of play dough recently. He did really well playing with it and was only tempted to put it to his mouth a few times. We will definitely have to do it again soon.

Crafty Naomi

Naomi spent a lot of December at our craft table making all sorts of gifts (most of them for me!) It was fun to watch her be focused for hours as she created.

Davey's Recital

Davey had her first recital for her music class this month. She did great. She definitely has a gift for music and a discipline for practicing that I greatly appreciate.

Disney on Ice

The girls and I got to see Disney on Ice earlier this month thanks to cheap tickets through Naomi's preschool. Malia and Davey each got to bring a friend as a birthday treat. We all really enjoyed it.

40 nuggets

Earlier this month, Andrew was out of town for a couple of days which meant we went through the McDonald's drive through for dinner. I got 40 nuggets and the 6 of us (5 kids plus me) almost were able to finish them. I can only imagine what our grocery bill will look like in 5-10 years as they all continue to eat more.

Chrissy Bear and Otis the dog

Naomi didn't have enough Bible bucks for the big gift certificate at church, so she enjoyed spending her money at the church's store. She came home with several things including "Chrissy Bear" and "Otis the dog". Every time she says "Chrissy Bear" it makes me smile.

No nap...

Since early November, Naomi has not been napping much. This has not been the smoothest of transitions... she often falls asleep around 4:30 or 5 in random places and we have to push her to stay awake until bedtime. On this particular night, she went downstairs to grab baba and fell asleep at the bottom of the stairs!

Lego Hotel

Malia and Davey have had their eye on the Lego Friends Hotel for months. I told them they were welcome to save up and get it. Thanks to a generous program at church that rewards them with Amazon gift cards if they learn verses and complete activities, they were able to reach their goal last week and got the hotel (Malia had to cram in memorizing the entire Beatitudes in 2 days to accomplish this).

It provided a lot of giddiness in our house, including me because they bought themselves their top Christmas item!

Christmas Jammies

Earlier this month, all of the cousins gathered at Emmie and Pop's house to receive their Christmas pajamas.

This year, they also received drums in addition to their pajamas and ornaments.

And of course we had to recreate one of our favorite pictures from last year... Drew and Abe on Ro's lap. Lots of hair changes in the last year!

Valentine's in November

The week of Thanksgiving, Naomi spent a lot of times making Valentine's for family and friends. We kept trying to tell her that Valentine's was not until February but she was determined and so she made quite a few!

First Snow Outting

Last winter, Drew was not walking so going out in the snow was a cold and unpleasant thing for him. A couple of weeks ago, we had a couple inches and Drew got to go out and play in it. It was windy and cold but he still loved it!

Twin Party

Since Davey and her cousin Abe share a birthday, we call them the birthday twins. This year we celebrated with the family by twinning with someone else.

Can you pick out the twins?

And all nine great-grandkids (mostly) cooperated to get their picture with Gege!

Operation Christmas Child Party 2016

Malia and Davey combined their birthdays again this year and hosted a packing party for Operation Christmas Child. We hosted 21 girls (including my 3) and transformed our family room into a store. Each girl shopped and packed a box and then several went back and were able to pack a second box. In the end, we packed 40 boxes!

Three weeks ago, just 48 hours after returning from our trip to Ohio, we welcomed 17 month old "R" into our home. She has been a sweet and (relatively) easy addition to the family. When we said yes, the thought was she would be with us for a month or two while they approved family out of state to take her.

The kids are all doing great with her and she has adjusted to us. I would say it is about as ideal as it can be. And yet it is such a broken situation; these situations always are.  Little ones have to be taken from their unsafe, yet familiar, lives and are thrust into ours.  New sights, new smells, new norms. I can't imagine how they process it all.

It is such a privilege to care for these little ones and yet there are a lot of times when I feel overwhelmed by all of the needs currently in my house. Pray for all seven of us in the weeks to come.

The morning after she came, Naomi got out all sorts of toys for "R" to play with. It is a beautiful thing to watch your children love on other children in ways you can't as an adult.

Tea Time

Drew keeps me on my toes. He is full of energy and all over the place (including on top of tables if we take our eyes off him). There are days when he wears me out. And then there are moments when he does stuff like this... sits quietly at a table and pours himself some tea.

We had a fun Halloween here.

It started with our church's Kingdom Festival.

Then we trick-or-treated at Gege's place (Drew was done being a lion by the time we took this picture).

We had a lion, a panda, a spider and Olaf this year.

And lastly, we trick-or-treated with our usual crew of old neighbors and dear friends.

Drew and Harriet

Drew and Harriet are the youngest cousins. They are 10 months apart. I had the chance to take them on a walk one day and it was so fun to see them together without their older siblings.

Cute cousins.

Mimi, Papa, and the Grandkids

While in Ohio we did our annual family photo. I was standing where the photographer was and snapped a few pictures on my phone of my parents with all of their grandkids. We have so few pictures of the six kids together, so this is a treasure.

American Girl Tea Party

We spent the first week of November in Ohio with my family. One of the things my older girls really wanted to do was a tea party at the American Girl store. So my mom took them as an early birthday present and despite a menu mix-up, we had a great time!

Raking Leaves

We do not have many mature leaves in our yard. So last weekend we went to Andrew's parents house to help rake theirs. The kids loved jumping and sitting in the leaf pile.

Drew was more interested than the box of crackers than the leaves but he did go in a few times.

Just to give some perspective, this was our leaf pile at home.

Drew's Faces

Recently, I was taking pictures of Drew and showing them to him. He was loving seeing himself. Here are a few.

Hiking with eight kids

Combined, my friend Kelly and I have eight kids aged eight and under. A couple of weeks ago we went on a hike nearby. It is supposed to be a pretty flat loop, a little over a mile long. When we were about .8 miles in, we came to a "trail closed" sign. So what were we to do with our eight kids who were all growing hot and tired? We forged on down the closed path to soon find that there was a bridge down. Thankfully there were branches and rocks that made enough of a rough path across so we adventured on. It made for a very memorable hike!

Kelly helping the kids across.

I love days like this when the kids wander and explore nature. And I love that I get to chat with my friend while taking in fresh air.

October at the Reservoir

A couple of weekends ago, the weather was so nice that we visited the beach at the reservoir near us. Once the wind died down, it was beautiful and the kids were all brave enough to go into the water a bit. One advantage of hitting the beach in October in Colorado is that we almost had it to ourselves and I am pretty sure we were the only ones in swimsuits!
