Field Trip Buddies

We try and do field trips fairly often. We have several families that we like meet up with (field trips are always more fun that way!) One of those families has four girls that match-up age-wise to our kids really well (poor Drew is the only boy). Somehow 8 kids ranging from 8 months to 8 years and 2 adults works for us!

Our scientists doing an experiment back in December.

And the rest of these are from the Botanical Gardens a couple of weeks ago (2 babies not pictured).

Crafts at the library

While researching extra things for the girls to do earlier this year, I came across some great classes that our local libraries were offering (for free!)

Here, Malia is holding the snowman she painted and the winter terrarium she made. Thanks library!

Picture Books

Our enthusiasm to read so many chapter books recently (see previous post) has caused a drop in the amount of picture book read at our house. This is most unfortunate for Naomi. We have seen her appetite for books increase so much over the last several months and we definitely want to feed it, but have been struggling to make it a priority. While at the library recently, I decided to sign her up for the 1,000 books before Kindergarten program. This simple book log has been a great way to encourage Andrew and I to keep reading picture books to her.

And there are so many great picture books. It is fun to go back to some books that we loved with the older girls and it is also fun to discover new ones. A lot of times, the older girls like to listen too. And we have even enlisted Malia here and there to read a book to Naomi.

Side note: Naomi often hears parts of the chapter books we read to the older girls, but she is soaking up Star Wars unlike any other chapter books (I think this is because Star Wars is everywhere right now so she is more curious). She will randomly quote "Dark Vader" (Darth Vader) or talk about how "Baba Fett" (Boba Fett) is a bad guy (please note that "Baba" is what she calls her beloved sleep sack/blanket). Tonight she quoted Han saying "I got a bad feeling about this" and had us rolling.

Book Wars

We love reading to the girls. It has been fun to progress (with the older ones) from picture books to chapter books. The Sonlight Curriculum we use for school has us reading about a chapter a day from a book (in addition to what we read for Science, History, etc). We usually like the books so much that we read more than a chapter a day. For example, A Little Princess was supposed to be read over four weeks according to the curriculum, and we read it in under a week.

Outside of school stuff, we have other books we love to read. We are going through the Ramona series again. We just read the latest books in both the Imagination Station and Magic Tree House series. Andrew has a couple of series he likes to read to the girls too. They recently finished their second read-through of the Dark Sea of Darkness series and have gone through The Chronicles of Narnia twice as well.

While at the library a few weeks ago, I noticed some Star Wars books. Because Star Wars has been everywhere over the last several months, the girls have been curious. But since a lot of Disney villains still give them nightmares, we decided Darth Vader in the movies might be too much (we would rather sleep than be woken up by scared children!). The books, however, have been a really fun way to introduce the girls to Jedis, Leia, the dark side, Yoda, etc, without the visual intensity.

What is the problem with all of this reading? Andrew and I have to fight over who gets to read what to the girls! Luckily, they are really capable of being wrapped up in many different storylines at once, and their appetite for listening is insatiable.

Top row are books we recently read for school. Bottom row is the first two Star Wars books. Andrew is almost done reading the third one to the girls.

Here they are learning that Darth Vader is Luke's father. It was priceless to watch their faces as it was revealed.

New Outfits

Naomi has been branching out from her favorite few shirts recently and adding all sorts of variety to her wardrobe. I have been enjoying the ensembles she puts together. Here was a fun one from last week.

Homemade Valentine's

Recently I left a bunch of misc Valentine's craft stuff out for the girls to create with. Malia and Davey worked for awhile and when I checked in, I realized they had decided to make Valentine's for their schoolmates. Below are Davey's... I love that she attached a paper doll and Perler bead creation to each of them... that is totally Davey right now.

Floor Puzzle

I got out a couple of large floor puzzles earlier this week for Naomi to try out. She gravitated to this farm one and has done it over and over. It has been fun to watch her puzzle muscles get stronger even over the least few days.

Broncos Love?

It is fun to have your hometown team in the Superbowl (even if you can't name more than 2 players on the team). We were getting dressed to go watch with family and realized that not only did Naomi have a Peyton jersey to wear, but we also had one that Drew had outgrown for Douglas to wear! (I spent $2.50 at a garage sale for both).

This is Naomi in true sadness because I put a little water in her hair to tame it for the picture after I had already told her she could have wild hair for the Superbowl).

After some time, she forgave me a gave me a smile!

Purple Loveseat and Chair

When we moved to Orlando in 2005, we did not have much furniture to fill our house (since we had previously been in a one bedroom apartment). Over the course of our first month there, Andrew's Aunt Bobbie kept finding us furniture - from garage sales and from friends. We were given an almost new purple loveseat and chair from a friend of hers who had just moved to town and didn't have space for it.

That loveseat and chair served us well for over 10 years, but last year started to tear and show signs of much love. We recently got some (new to us) couches and chairs and so had to depart with our purple friends. I was actually very ready to get rid of them until my kids started getting sentimental. Naomi was really sad as we waited for a family to come pick them up. So I asked the girls if they wanted their pictures in the purple chair (which I nursed and gave countless bottles in...sniff, sniff). It helped ease a little of their sadness.

And it was cool, because we found out that the family that we gave them to, turned out to be another foster/adopt family.

Indoor Snow Fun

We got quite a bit of snow this week. The girls love to play outside in the snow but thankfully (for me), they love to play inside with snow also.

These are from almost a month ago, but I never posted them.

Since we have a new house, we have a new sledding hill. The girls checked it out with Andrew and their cousins first and then our 6 family went back a few days later. Some other people had built a jump which the girls enjoyed.

Davey going over in big blue.

Naomi is fearless.

It took Malia several runs to work up the courage to let herself go fast enough to get air off of the jump, but she did it!
