Sometimes my girls bug each other and fight over the silliest things.

And sometimes they use their own money to buy a (brand new) game from a garage sale and then they come home and peacefully play this new game.

Summer Art - Mosaic Stepping Stones

Another art project we tackled a couple of weeks ago was mosaic stepping stones.

Here's Davey mixing her plaster (I think I pulled her hair back after I took this picture!)

Naomi adding mosaic tiles to her butterfly.

Malia had a bad batch of plaster and had to wait until a few days later to make hers. Here's are how the three turned out.

Summer Art - Fairy Gardens

Malia got a fairy garden kit a few years ago for her birthday and we never even opened it. A couple of weeks ago, we finally put it together. I did a lot of looking around for things so Davey and Naomi could build gardens as well and ended up deciding to just buy two more kits (50% off at JoAnn's).

The girls really enjoyed painting and assembling their gardens. We planted some seeds and waited for them to grow...

... and we are still waiting two weeks later. I think we might have some dud seeds. Also the paint chipped off of the container which was disappointing for all. So, it looks like we have some more work to do on our fairy gardens this summer.

3 years, 11 months

Today we are one month away from Naomi's 4th birthday. She talks about her birthday everyday (and has been for months). She can't wait to turn 5 and is slowly realizing that she has to turn 4 before she can turn 5.

This girl is full of life and wonder. She is strong, opinionated and yet tender.
Here she is with her beloved Douglas who is wearing her, also beloved, baba.

The Great Sand Dunes

I never wrote about our family getaway on Memorial Day weekend to the Great Sand Dunes. We have been wanting to go for a few years now and finally pulled it off.

It is about a 3.5 hour drive, but we knew that going on Memorial Weekend we would probably run into crowds. Thankfully, we did not hit any traffic until we were within a couple miles of the park entrance. At that point, this was our view which was not so bad.

One of the reasons that so many people visit the Great Sand Dunes in late May/early June is because the melting snow from the surrounding mountains produces a creek at the base of the dunes. The kids really enjoyed playing in it. Here are the girls in the creek with Drew exploring in the background.

We spent a majority of our two days there playing in the creek, but the girls did hike up some of the smaller dunes and enjoyed running down them.

Reservoir Classes

We live just a few miles away from a Reservoir and I just recently realized that they occasionally host (free) classes for kids. Malia and Davey have attended two this summer so far. The first focused on insects and spiders and the second class on reptiles and amphibians. Here they are with their bug catching nets.

Evening Hike

We ended a couple of weekends ago by meeting friends at a trailhead with a picnic dinner and then hiked a bit as the sun was setting. I loved so many things about hiking later in the day... we will definitely do it again soon.

Summer Art - Foam Square Mosaics

One thing I am loving about summer is more time to do arts and crafts. Recently the girls did a little mosaic kit and enjoyed it a lot. A few days later, I was cleaning out old art stuff and came across a bunch of similar foam squares. I challenged the girls to come up with their own design and they did a great job. They used their original creations as birthday cards for friends whose birthdays we celebrated over the weekend.

Davey was diligent all semester to learn Bible verses for Wednesday night church. When the kids recite verses, they earn Bible Bucks which can be redeemed at the end of the semester at a store. Davey earned so many bucks this semester that she was able to trade them in for a gift card.

Recently at the store, she spotted these PlushCraft sets that she has had her eye on for awhile. I reminded her that she had money to spend and she quickly picked out this hedgehog kit. That afternoon she worked hard and finished it. I loved this craft project because she did it almost entirely independently.
