DR Day 6

Driving around Cabarete was always an adventure. Andrew did it masterfully even though each day seemed to throw a new challenge (roads closing, narrow detours, etc.) As we set out to adventure out on day 6, we had to wait quite awhile for a garbage truck to load up because there was no room to go around it.

Once we got past the garbage truck, we enjoyed a nice ride out of town and slightly into the mountains to visit Monkey Jungle, a preserve for rescued monkeys.

We were able to feed the monkeys... some in our group enjoyed it more than others!

They also had several rhinoceros iguanas there which Des (and I) loved watching.

They workers had warned us not to bring in anything loose while with the monkeys but no one thought about pacifiers. Just before we about to make our ascent out of the monkey enclosure, one came up to Abe and took the pacifier from his mouth!

It was fun to see more of the lush, green mountains of the DR while there.

For dinner we braved some rain to walk to a fantastic waffle place.

Here are some images from the walk back to our place.

DR Day 5

Day 5 started out rainy and overcast...

... so we had to be creative indoors including making this ramp for Drew to put his cars down.

It stopped raining but was still overcast for most of the day.

Davey was feeling better so we put her in the stroller and pushed her to the beach. It looked ridiculous because we had five kids younger than her walking but she was still recovering. As soon as we got to the beach she perked up...

... and was soon back to her happy place, jumping in the waves!

The beach did not have a ton of shells but the kids still enjoyed searching.

Drew still preferred the sand.

After naps, we played outside with some of our neighbors.

Drew was fascinated by the fishermans' catch of the day.

DR Day 4

On Day 4, we ventured out on the lagoon right by our houses in canoes.

This is the house that Alli and Chris stayed in (with our trusty rental van parked next to it)...

And our family stayed in the right side of this unit which was right next door to Alli and Chris. In the courtyard (on the other side of that fence) was where our pool was. It was such a great set up for us.

Drew did not like the canoe ride because he had sunscreen in his eye.

I ended up having to do laundry by hand which really made me appreciate my washer and dryer (especially with a family of 6!)

Naomi used some down time to work on this puzzle.

Unfortunately Davey got sick this day. Thankfully it was short lived and she was the only one who got sick. This afternoon, I stayed back with Davey while the rest of our crew went to the beach for pizza.

DR Day 3

Day 3 took us to Sosua where the kids enjoyed their new boogie boards. Drew preferred playing in the sand more than the water and Juni continued to be super flexible and sweet. After the beach and lunch at a HOPE clients restaurant, we went back to where we were staying and enjoyed time in the pool. While younger kids napped, Alli and I walked with the older ones up to grab some groceries.

DR Day 2

On Day 2, we adventured to a more remote beach where the kids made mud pies for a long time. We eventually took a boat across the river to enjoy a unique setting for lunch. Naomi got her anticipated fish and was not a fan. At night, we walked up to the local ice cream shop and caught the 2 year old cousins being sweet to each other.

DR Day 1

In March, we got to spend almost two weeks traveling to the Dominican Republic to visit Alli, Chris and their kids. It was a great trip. I will try and post some highlights from each day.

Our first day in country (not traveling there), was spent gathering our bearings. We stayed in a neighborhood that was removed from the resort strip where most tourists would stay. It was a great way to interact with locals and get a better feel for what life is like for lots of people in the DR.

Overcast skies did not keep us from making the 20+ minute walk to the beach to see the ocean. The kids found a crab that temporarily became a pet for them.

Davey is in the middle of her second season of soccer. She is definitely understanding the game more which is fun.

This time she has two cousins and a friend on the team (which she loves).

And all of the spectators love the beautiful mountain backdrop on the field they play on.
